OPC Rescued Me, and My Homeschool – A Review of Homeschool Rescue from Only Passionate Curiosity
What Is It?
Each lesson is a video (or audio or PDF transcript, whichever suits your needs best) that brings Heather at OPC right into your life for what feels like a one-on-one counseling session.
At the end of each lesson, you will get a bit of homework – a task or two that will help you evaluate a different aspect of your homeschool and give you the tools to act in areas you want to fix. You can pace the lessons at the suggested schedule, or alter them to fit your life.
Will It Enhance Your Homeschool?
You will be able to get a lot from topics that you discover need some work and other areas you may find that you have already done a lot of heavy lifting already. Even in areas that you are doing well in, you will probably find a tip or a bit of advice or a link that you can really use to make that part of homeschooling even better.
What Comes With This Product?
Online Lessons With Downloadable Content, Easy to Adapt and Personalize
The lessons are accessible online through a website and include videos as well as printable worksheets and links to other sites for additional information.
A lot of the content is downloadable, so you can use it at your leisure even if you do not have access to Internet always. I downloaded the content (audio recordings and PDF transcripts and homework and other collateral) to my phone so that I could listen to the lessons privately using my earphones while sitting at a child’s karate lessons each week.
Again, the beauty of this service is that you can adapt it in so many ways to fit your needs and your lifestyle.
OPC provides additional personalized support through email as well as a members-only Facebook group. No matter your needs, OPC has thought of a way to help.
Suggested Use
There is a pacing guide that outlines a rough plan for you to work through the lessons and modules. I found that in some areas I really needed extra time to think and plan before I felt satisfied and moved on. Other areas covered topics that were mostly solved for me already and those were perhaps quicker than the suggested pace for me.
Time Required To Use This
Homework Length: 30-40 minutes, on average. The lessons that covered areas that I felt really needed work in my homeschool life consumed several hours. But I love to sit and think and plan. And the homework often gave me exactly the tools I needed to revamp aspects of my life and my homeschool.
How I Used It
Each week I set aside time to listen to a lesson video and make notes and at least begin to work through the homework.
I Take Do Lessons At My Own Pace
Oftentimes the homework required more thought and so I let it sit over a few days and even found myself discussing the ideas in the lesson with my husband and children.
I Look Forward To This Time Each Week
This time that the lessons carved out for me to sit and think by myself have turned into something I look forward to each week. In fact sometimes I cannot wait for the time to come around and I end up doing two or three sessions in a week.
Did I Like It?
The Homeschool Rescue allowed me to fix parts of my homeschool that were not working so well and showed me ways to do better in areas I had not considered.
I know that as my children age and our homeschooling changes, I will come back to these lessons to help me re-evaluate and adjust focus to optimize our happiness and the effectiveness of our homeschool.
Where I was before Homeschool Rescue: Struggling with questions.
- Are my kids learning enough?
- Why doesn’t my homeschool work smoothly every day?
- How am I going to organize everything for High School?
- What if I miss something and the kids never learn _______?
- When am I ever going to get enough sleep?
As I worked through the lessons I discovered that I was spending a lot of time in my day fighting to make my kids and I come together to work. We adjusted our day and anchored hard-to-get-to activities to milestone like lunch, dinner, a daily walk, and my husband’s bedtime, and all of a sudden everything fell into place! We all were productive, stayed on schedule, got everything done, and enjoyed each other and our day.
Now that I am halfway through the Homeschool Rescue courses, everyone (including my husband and kids) is happy and productive and on the same page:
- We have a High School plan in place
- The kids (and I) know how they learn best, what they love to do, what comes easily, and have goals for their future adult lives they are working towards.
- We have plans for the good days and the bad (mine and my kids).
- I am now organized enough that I found a huge amount of extra time in my days that I put to good use.
- I am happy and calm. The kids are happy and calm and productive. My husband is happy and calm and productive.
- Our homeschooling life is even better than I thought it could be.
I know there will still be days that are not so great, but we even now have a plan for those.
This is a fantastic resource well worth your time and money!
