Here is a German sugar and butter cookie recipe I grew up with. It is well, well tested and ever so delicious. Also the dough is robust enough that kids can do the mixing and kneading and rolling and cutting and the cookies will still taste great.
German Sugar and Butter Cookies:
- 2 large or 3 small eggs (or 6 yolks)
- 200-250 g Sugar
- 500 g Flour
- 250 g Butter (2 1/2 sticks)
- 2 tsp freshly-grated Lemon Peel
- 1 tsp Salt
Traditional Method:
Make a mound of the flour with a dent to hold liquids in middle. Cover with the sugar & lemon peel & salt. Cut butter into cubes and sprinkle around on mound. Crack eggs into center dent. Use two table knives to cut dough until it is blended and starts to clump. Then knead until it is mixed.
Modern Method:
Use mixer. Add ingredients in following order: butter, sugar, eggs, lemon peel, flour combined with salt.
bake for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees F
cool cookies and then decorate with icing, plain white powdered sugar, and let dry.
get out brushes and paint cookies with milk colored with food coloring (or be creative and use natural dyes).
Now, stand back and watch the kids create wonderful cookie art, but don’t forget to take pictures of their creations before they gobble them down!
Enjoy the day!
