D is for DePaola and his amazing pictures

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES

Tomi DePaola was born in Connecticut in 1934 into an Irish-Italian family. In addition to being a children’s author, he is an illustrator and an artist.

WHAT TOMI dePAOLA WROTE

Tomi DePaola has written many, many stories about all sorts of topics. Children living in a big city, bible stories, and even an old woman named Stregna Nona, are among the myriad of stories he has created.

In fact he has written over 260 books, so far. But the piece that makes these books so unique is their illustrations. DePaola is an amazing illustrator who creates three dimensional, colorful, and happy worlds in the pages of his picture books.

WHY I LOVE HIS PICTURE BOOKS

While many people know Tomi DePaola for his Stregna Nona series, or the many biblical picture books he lovingly created, my children and I were introduced to him a bit differently.

One day we were at the library. One of my kids grabbed a book about the Barker Twins off the shelf and declared it was the greatest story ever. My children are twins as well, so an early reader about twins was a shoe in for our family. My kids loved it and from there we branched out to enjoy all his books.

I really recommend you pick out a Tomi DePaola book the next time you head to the library. Then just set it on the coffee table, open, to a particularly colorful page. Let it be there and watch as your child walks by and discovers the beauty and grace inside the pages!
