Finding Independence

Foster IndependenceI decided to start adding my thoughts about my kids, my husband and our homeschool life in graphic form once a week as something I call “Mid-Week Mom Moments.”

By the middle of the week I usually drag just a bit. I can see the end of the week coming but there are so many lessons and activities to go before we get there that it can sometimes feel like I just won’t make it. I usually turn to a few minutes of “me time” when that happens and I sit and doodle words and pictures wrapped together in a way that helps me feel my way through. And so I thought I would share these thoughts and ideas that I use to focus on what my kids and my husband need throughout the week.

This week I have been thinking about what I can do to help my kids to become independent. They really are pretty independent already but last weekend I was thinking about all the things my kids do and learn on their own and wondering if I wasn’t maybe standing in their way once in a while. Sometimes I want to help them with something and then realize that I should have resisted the urge. Standing back sometimes is just what they need. But only if they realize they are loved and cherished and respected at the same time.

I would love to know what challenges you face with your kids and how you foster independence in your own children. Share in the comments below. I know we can learn from each other.
