When the wind howls around our house and thunder threatens to disrupt our quiet homeschooling mornings, I drift back to the warmer quiet days of summer.
Today, even though it is nearly May, was one of those days.
The kids always seem to get extra creative when the morning is blustery. And so I found myself sitting in the dining room with country music blaring through the house, watching my daughter experiment with oil paints and listening to my son telling us about the program he was writing. I think that perhaps when it is wild outside, the kids seek extra comfort inside – whether it means art and hot chocolate, or a story read to them while they set up watch in the big picture window, bundled in sleeping bags and comforters.
And so there I was thinking of the evening picnics we take as a family when the weather is warm and the evening air caresses you gently as you eat sandwiches and chips at the lake. I love the way the warm air of the evening smells and how the warm moisture of dusk adds a ringing loveliness to children’s shouts and laughter.
I cannot wait for the weather to get warm again, even though days like today are precious time I spend with my children.
I cannot wait for the smell of summer evenings and sandwiches by the lake.
I cannot wait to get out…
