It is hard sometimes to remember to keep a positive attitude about history.
When teaching your child about our history, the history of Western Civilization, it is so easy to fall into thinking about the dangers and missteps made in our collective past. So many texts nearly vilify our founders, great military leaders, and those who have succeeded in the name of good.
It only gets worse if you read the news these days or pay attention to the constantly shifting sands of political issues. Popular culture in general focuses on negative images. Even movies criticize our values.
And as adults we struggle to understand the how and why of our civilization, drawing us to seek the chinks in the robust armor of our culture. When we teach our children about history, we keep these thoughts in mind and some, perhaps too much, of the circumspection rubs off on our young generation.
But every so often, I am reminded by something I hear or read that we really are part of a great and good nation. The latest reminder comes from Bill Whittle in a video that is very kid-friendly and uplifting. I absolutely recommend watching it and showing it to your children.
A great reminder of why I love my country unabashedly, it is importantly positive and positively important.
