I have had quite a time finding a reading list of great books that suit our family, and so I am sharing with you our Medieval & Renaissance Times read-aloud list.
Medieval & Renaissance Times Read-Aloud Books for Middle Years
- The Arabian Nights Edited by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora A Smith
- Beowulf: A new telling by Robert Nye (Kids like it best if you can manage to tell the whole story with a viking-esque accent. It is hard to do but worth it.)
- The Bible: 1611 Edition, King James Version
- Boy Knight by G.A. Henty
- Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, retold by Geraldine McCaughrean
- Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede
- Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
- The Knight of the White Cross by G. A. Henty
- Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory
- The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle
- The Norse Myths retold by Kevin Crossley-Holland
- Otto of the Silver Hand by Howard Pyle
- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by J.R.R Tolkien
Wherever possible we try to get print copies of books. Sometimes the only versions available at a reasonable price can be had in pdf or kindle format. But the feel of pages in your child’s hand is so much better than a piece of electronics. Many of the books in the above list we found in second-hand book stores at very low cost, or borrowed from our local library. So you really do not have to spend a huge amount of money to create a library for your kids.
