Did you know that you can make a homeschooling curriculum for yourself using every day books? Have you wished you could drop all those text books and worksheets in favor of reading plain old books?
I have great news for you! You definitely can do it. In fact this kind of homeschooling even has a name: Literature-based homeschooling.
How do you do it? Well, you can ease on in like I did with literature guides from Beautiful Feet Press. I would recommend starting there if you are unsure.
Or you could just go cold-turkey. Put away all those text books. Grab books written by the people who were there and made the actual discoveries. Settle your kids down with paper and coloring pens, or puzzles. And now comes the fun bit: read to them!
We have been learning EVERYTHING this way for over three years now and my kids have just blossomed.
We have read the ancient authors, the great figures who shaped early Christianity, and even autobiographies of musicians and artists and explorers.
What about science? Well, that is easy too.
I have been reading these books aloud to my kids as well. I picked Richard Feynman for Physics. It is pretty math intensive so you have to wait until your kids get through Algebra to begin, but it is worth the wait. We even do chemistry aloud.
I realize that a lot of it depends on how your children learn best. I have one who is an aural learner and one who learns better by doing, so I add writing to supplement the learning on the side for him.
