My son knows how to program, and likes all things coding so we were interested to review a live coding class from CodeWizardsHQ. As a mom, I am always on the lookout for coding classes for kids.

The concept of CodeWizardsHQ is aimed at teaching children to learn the fundamentals of coding in a nurturing, supportive environment.

Your child will attend live classes online using a computer and a headset. Under the instruction of the teacher, your child will work in a coding environment that the teacher can monitor and complete tasks and learn the basics of coding. Your child advances in his or her wizarding rank as they attend class, do homework, and are thus awarded wizarding points that add a fun component to the courses.

The company is focused on the general market for schoolchildren, regardless of where they learn, however they have separate pages to sign up for classes for the general population, and for homeschooling.

What Comes With This Product?

This is a weekly online live class for children

Your child will get access to his or her class and also to a community forum where children from all over the country can chat and discuss among other things, the homework that they are working on.

If you miss your class time, the sessions are all recorded and are posted online so that your child can watch them.

Online Dashboard is your child’s access to courses, account information, progress, attendance, and an online community for chatting with other ‘wizards’ from around the world

Suggested Pacing

These courses are 12 weeks long and the pacing and work is rigidly set by the company.

Time Required To Teach These Coding Classes For Kids

Preparation Time: 0 minutes (Unless you need to set up your computer for online access)

Teaching Time: 0 minutes (The teacher does the teaching in a live format with a small group of children. You are not involved in the process)

Grading: 0 minutes (Again, this is a live class that runs as a public school computer class would. All you need to do is pay your money and set your child up with the computer and walk away.)

How We Liked It & How We Used It

As part of this review, we were given a 60 minute introductory course session for my son to participate in by the company. Since this was just one introductory lesson on HTML coding, there was no homework to evaluate, as there will be if you sign your child up for the courses. A majority of the class seemed to be spent learning how to edit a piece of pre-written code to adjust 3 parameters (selecting an image of the child’s choice, writing text to be displayed in a speech bubble, and adding a background of the child’s choice). The end goal was to create a one-page HTML sheet designed as a comic page.

The teacher was fantastic and supportive and worked all the children through the tasks in a fun and upbeat way.

As I mentioned earlier, my son already knows how to program, so there wasn’t anything to learn but my son said that the teacher was very friendly and engaging. I did notice that one child in our session was having trouble getting started for a majority of the class and my son ended up jumping in to see if he could help.
