I am perched in my favorite spot in a sitting chair in my bedroom by the open window, taking in the afternoon breeze with all it’s summer scents. The warm grass, elderberry, and redbud trees swirl together into a wonderful pungent fragrance.
Adding up: I spent the morning teaching my twins the art of factoring polynomials in preparation for learning to deal with algebraic fractions. It was a break for them given that last week they were learning to divide polynomials. I am writing an algebra curriculum as we go along which we will sell, although there will be a way for homeschooling parents to get the materials at no or low cost. Because somehow those of us who homeschool need to make ends meet and have everything add up.
Cleaning out: And in the distance, bouncing off the houses across the street, is the sweet sound of my daughter playing her flute on her sleeping porch at the back of our house. Given that it is summer and the forecasters predicted a heat wave for this week (that has yet to materialize), I spent the weekend cleaning out her sleeping porch, and so given a new space to occupy she decided play her instruments out there.
Right now she is playing one of my favorite tunes: Teddybear Picnic. We sang that song together so many, many times when she was a baby… and a toddler… and a preschooler… and even last week.
So all that cleaning out adds up to a happy child who shares her happiness with our neighborhood by providing an impromptu neighborhood concert.
As our next door neighbor says, “The snake charmer is at work!”
And that adds up to a lot!
