ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HER TIMES
Arlene Mosel was born in 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio. After college, she became a librarian and began writing children’s stories.
The most famous of all her stories I think is the retelling of Tikki Tikki Tembo. I don’t know about you, but once I hear someone say, “Tikki Tikki Tembo”, I have to stop and finish the rest of the boy’s name myself.
I think the best part of this story is the repetition and the opportunity for children to memorize sections of this sing-song story. After you read it to your children a few times, you can let your child recite parts of the book with you as you read.
This kind of pattern recognition and syllabic beat is so important as a foundation for learning. . . math! Bet you did not see that one coming! Yes learning math begins with counting.
If you get tired of reading Tikki Tikki Tembo over and over to your children, there is a delightful recording of a young woman reading the book aloud. She has set up the book so children can see the pictures as she reads. After she reads the text on a page, she goes back to talk about the pictures before turning the page. This is a fantastic thing for all of us to do when reading aloud as it helps children develop observational skills necessary for so many of the sciences and even logic and critical thinking.
Tikki Tikki Tembo is not the only book that Arlene Mosel wrote. I think the one I remember best is called The Funny Little Woman. If you don’t know it, it is worth a try!
