“Psst!”
Every so often I hear that in my head. It is like a tap on the shoulder saying, “Pay attention!”
Does it every happen to you? I bet I am not the only mom who hears the “Psst!”
Last week I ‘heard’ it after I had gone to bed. I realized something was wrong with my daughter and I could not ignore that feeling. I had to get up and go check on her.
It was warm and cozy under the blankets and the house was cold and dark. I was so tired and really wanted to roll over and go to sleep, but that “Psst!” told me I had to go. Have you been there? We have no choice, do we. It is all part of being Mom.
So I padded off to her room and asked, “Is there anything wrong?”
“Yes, actually. How did you know?”
“I have help being a mommy. Tell me about it.”
And so she did. It ended up being a very late night for me. But it turned out to be important that I was there to talk to her just at that moment. It ended up being easily solvable but if I had waited till the morning it would have spiraled into a big tangle in her head.
How did I know that I needed to go right then and talk with her? It was the “Psst!” in my head. That tap on the shoulder.
I used to call it ‘mother’s intuition’, but I think it is something else.
As mothers, we are always listening out for our children. One ear is always tuned to catch cries for help. No matter what we are doing, we hear. And when they are too far from us or they are older and don’t cry out in the night anymore, we have that “Psst!” in our head that tells us it is time to go and help.
Do you ever hear that “Psst!” telling you to go catch up your children and comfort them?
