ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES
Arthur Ransome was born in 1884 in England. He lived through two world wars and the hippie era, making his life an amazing span across a tremendous shift in culture and technology. He was an active author and even suspected by MI5 of being a spy for a time.
As a child I read his Swallows and Amazons series and for a time, “lived” in those amazing outdoor adventures of the children of the story. The story is a chronicle of the adventures of a group of children between 1929 and 1934. This book series is one of the reasons I love the outdoors so much.
If you have never read the series, it is definitely worth picking up and reading with your kids. You will be transported to a slower, gentler time and sail with the children in the story around England, Scotland, and even as far as the Caribbean and the South China Sea.
