Remembering Friends

Remembering FriendsToday is a bright a shiny spring day and I found myself remembering friends. I have had many, many friends throughout my life, but most of them moved out of my life. I think I am not the best at keeping in touch and considering how many different “careers” I have had (everything from scientist to sales manager to market analyst to homeschooling mom), I suppose it could be understandable.

I haven’t spent much time on social media reconnecting simply because I would much rather sit down in the kitchen with a cup of coffee and a tasty treat and chat over the table with a friend. Social media always seems to me like those really, really long Christmas letters we invariably receive each year that enumerate all the accomplishments of a family – too many details and too much of what seems like social media marketing more than sharing.

I think often of my closest friends. A few of them are nearby and in touch. Others are far away and we remain friends only because we know that we like each other and treasure the times that we get to see each other. Still others live only in my memories, providing me daily with remembered advice and special shared moments. Those are the friends I miss most as I will not see them again on this world.

My truest friend in all the world, though, spends his days right beside me. My husband travels through this life by my side as my companion and my best friend. I have known him for more than 30 years. Life with him is comforting and safe and constant. And today is the anniversary of the afternoon that we pledged ourselves to each other, exchanged rings, laughed, cried, and ate cake.

And so in celebration and remembrance of all my friends, especially my husband, I am off to bake a chocolate cake!

This is a five minute Friday post with the word prompt for the day brought to you by Kate: Friends.  Five Minute Friday is a group of people who gather on Friday to do a five minute free writing session around a word prompt.  Then we share what we have written and offer encouragement. Why not join us?

  1. Whoo-hoo! Happy 30th Anniversary! I love your phrase, “treasure the times”– it resonates with my thoughts the past two weeks. Stopping by from FMF #42.
