S is for Richard Scarry and Huckle Cat

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES

Richard Scarry was born in Boston, MA in 1919 into a shop-keeping family. While he lived through the Great Depression, his family maintained a comfortable life. Richard tried business school, and did a stint in the military during WWII.

In the army, he discovered illustration through his work creating maps and after he returned to civilian life, he fell into his love of illustrating and writing children’s books.

Of all of Richard Scarry’s over 300 books, my most favorite is my worn copy of I Am A Bunny. While this picture book for young children does not feature Huckle Cat and his friends, it has the same gentle and quiet feel common to all of Scarry’s books.

Whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, “five!”

If you have never read these stories to your children, you are in for a real treat! Each book is filled with humor, detail, bright colors, and an amazing world you can both sink into as you turn the pages together.

  1. I have not read these books in ages but loved them when I was little. I need to pull out a few to read with my five year old.

  2. Our kids love books by Richard Scarry – we have a few and borrowed a bunch from the library a few months ago. Plus they like the TV show.
