Summer Days and Letting Things Happen

Today was one of those days when my kids remind me that they are learning so much by homeschooling – so much more than I am intentionally teaching them.

the windDoodlebugRed sat down this evening and drew me an image of what the wind looks like. Her drawing is so calm and centered. I was surprised that it looks nothing like the style of drawing she normally uses. Her brother sat down for a conversation with the Hub this evening and the boy was articulate and reasoned and able to carry on a strong conversation with his dad. His conversational abilities reminded  me of a statement I heard someone make this week: I can always tell a home schooled kid. He walks with his head up, his shoulders back, he speaks respectfully, and looks you in the eye.

Summer days like today remind me that the Hub and I are doing the right thing by homeschooling. Our kids are growing in so many ways, all without being pushed or forced. All I have to do is feed their appetite for knowledge, even if it means lugging 80 books from the library each week to satisfy the Doodlebug reading monsters. It may be a lot of work but as the Hub likes to say: “Homeschooled kids have parents who love them too much to let them go to public school”. That may sound harsh, but it is true and it really boils down to love. Love, drawing the wind, and some good conversation.
