Mark Twain – Where He Fits In History

Mark Twain was born in 1835 in Missouri and has become THE iconic American author of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was the year of the first assassination attempt on a sitting U.S. president (Jackson), the beginning of  the Texas revolution, the first installment of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales was published, Darwin was traveling on tthe HMS Beagle, and the liberty bell cracked, again.

Mark Twain really is a cultural icon for us here in America.

His books are among the must-reads in our home. When my children were little we read Tom Sayer and Huckleberry Finn aloud. And in middle school they worked their way through Life on the Mississippi, a fantastic tale that teaches the geography of the middle of our country in the most entertaining fashion you can imagine.

 

Of all Mark Twain’s books, Life on the Mississippi is by far our favorite.

 

You cannot go wrong by grabbing up any of Mark Twain’s books. We have enjoyed all the titles in the list below. Each is a wonderful adventure filled with detail and wit and wisdom.
