ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES
Umberto Eco was born in Italy in 1932. His father was an accountant, but served in three wars. During World War II, Umberto and his mother escaped the fighting by moving to the mountains.
Umberto became a professor at the University of Turin, was a prolific author, and a philosopher. But the best bit of trivia about Umberto is the size of his personal library. He has 30,000 books in his apartment in Milan and 20,000 books in his vacation home near Urbino. Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to own 50,000 books? Wow!
“When men stop believing in God, it isn’t that they then believe in nothing: they believe in everything.”
WHAT UMBERTO ECO WROTE
My first introduction to Umberto Eco was Foucault’s Pendulum, which is a fantastic story about a mystery and descendants of the Knights Templar. The man had a glorious command of language and his thoughts go so deep you find yourself chewing on the ideas long after you finish the stories.
Among the fantastic books he wrote are:
- The Name of the Rose
- Foucault’s Pendulum
- The Island of the Day Before
- Turning Back the Clock
- The Infinity of Lists
- The Prague Cemetery
Umberto also wrote a few books for children.
- The Bomb and the General
- The Three Astronauts
- The Gnomes of Gnu
