For us the best part of homeschooling has been those special outings, just Mom and kids having an adventure. And so I decided to share what is left of our journey with you.
I would love to hear your experiences and share ideas as we work our way through the next couple of years. Anywhere you live has treasures to find and explore with your kids. We have done a lot, but still have some amazing ones on our list.
So I think I will just dive in now.
A couple of weeks ago we took a trip to the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers. I grew up in the Bay Area and worked every weekend as a teenager at Steinhart Aquarium in Golden Gate park. And yet it has been several decades since I have been to the Conservatory of Flowers.
If you live far enough away that you cannot just grab the kids and hop in the car to go see all the amazing plants, you can still experience the beauty with a virtual field trip.
It was my daughter who wanted to see what was inside that amazing glass building, and so in we went.
On a Friday afternoon, there is practically no one in the whole building. I think there were only about 10 other people there, and that included the employees. The conservatory is 140 years old, and survived the great quake of 1906 in San Francisco.
Even if you are not a plant enthusiast, you will be amazed by the HUGE lily pads, pitcher plants, spice trees, and a full grown jungle tree.
It really is like walking in a room filled with oxygen, because in fact that is what it is. They have squeezed in so many thousands of different plants into the building that you come out feeling so rejuvenated.
If you have kids of any age, this is a really great and cost-effective trip to take.
And on the way home you can swing through the northern part of the park and visit the bison (yes, bison) and the tulips by the windmills, and then scoot home along the great highway and imagine you can see all the way to Japan.
Tune in next Wednesday for another wandering adventure tale. In the meantime I would love to hear about great places you visit with your children.
